BarNet Email Scenarios

This document describes different scenarios to access mailboxes on the BarNet mailserver.

Scenario one: One user and one computer to access the mailbox

This is the easiest scenario. The mail reader should be configured to use the POP3 protocol to retrieve the email from the server. The email will be stored on the harddisk of the user.

N.B. People who use a laptop to access the mailbox from work and home but use no other computers should use the first scenario. To send email from home, they can use the BarNet Secure Mail Server. Please see the document How to configure Outlook to use the Secure POP3 and IMAP Service in the Document Library on how to configure this.

Scenario two: One user, multiple computers to access the mailbox

This scenario is for a single user who has multiple computers to access his email on, for example on at work and one at home. The mail reader should be configured to use the IMAP protocol. The mail stays on the server, so the user can see all his sent and received emails. The user needs to be online when reading the email from home.

Scenario two: Multiple users to access the same mailbox

This scenario is for a boss-secretary relation, where the secretary should be able to read the email of the boss. The mail reader should be configured to use the IMAP protocol. The mail stays on the server, so the boss and secretary are aware of which emails have been read and replied to.
