Eudora and Secure Socket Layers

Intended audience

People who are using Eudora to read their email.

Symptons

When sending or receiving email from the BarNet mail servers, you see this message in the Eudora status box: SSL Negotiation Failed: Certificate Error: Cert Chain not trusted.

How to resolve

• From the Tools menu in Eudora select Personalities.
• In the personalities menu, click with the right hand mouse button on the BarNet account (which is most likely the Dominant account) and select Properties.
• At the bottom, click on the Last SSL Info button.
• The dialog box popping up will say in the notes Certificate Error: Cert Chain not trusted.. Click on the Certificate Information Manager button at the bottom of the dialog box.
• In the new dialogbox, under Server Certificates, open the whole tree which starts with AU, *.barnet.com.au.... until you see US, UT, Salt Lake City, The USERTRUST Network. Select the certificate from the USERTRUST Network and click on the Add to trusted button at the bottom of the dialogbox.
• Now close all dialogboxes and send the email again. It will now be send properly. If you go to the Certificate Information Manager again, it will show up a happy face instead of a skull and bones.
